The public side is what everyone sees. The private side, called the dashboard, is where you make changes \u2014 and only people with accounts can get in.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"logging-in\">Logging in<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Go to your site&#8217;s web address and add <code>\/wp-admin<\/code> to the end. Sign in with your university username and password. You will land on the dashboard: a plain administrative screen with a menu down the left side. Visitors never see any of this.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a-tour-of-the-dashboard\">A tour of the dashboard<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The left-side menu has more options than you will ever need. Only a few matter:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Pages<\/strong> \u2014 the permanent pages of your site: your homepage, your research page, your contact page, and so on.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Posts<\/strong> \u2014 dated news items. The difference between pages and posts matters, and <a href=\"\/how-your-site-works\/pages-and-posts\/\">it gets its own explanation<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Media<\/strong> \u2014 every image you have ever uploaded, kept in one library you can reuse.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Appearance<\/strong> \u2014 controls how the site looks. See <a href=\"\/how-your-site-works\/themes\/\">themes<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Users<\/strong> \u2014 who can log in. See <a href=\"\/how-your-site-works\/users-and-roles\/\">users<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything else in the menu you can safely ignore.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"making-your-first-edit\">Making your first edit<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Click <strong>Pages<\/strong>, find the page you want to change, and click its title. The editor opens, showing the page much as visitors see it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything on a page is a <strong>block<\/strong> \u2014 a paragraph is a block, a heading is a block, an image is a block. Click into any paragraph and start typing. To add something new, click the plus sign and pick what you want. You can drag blocks up and down to rearrange them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing you do is visible to the public until you click the <strong>Update<\/strong> button (or <strong>Publish<\/strong>, for a page that has never been published). Until then, fiddle freely. The <strong>Preview<\/strong> option shows you exactly how the page will look before you commit.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"you-cannot-really-break-it\">You cannot really break it<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every time you update a page, WordPress quietly keeps the old version \u2014 you can open a page&#8217;s revision history and restore any earlier state. On top of that, we keep backups of your entire site. There is no combination of clicks that puts you somewhere we cannot get you back from.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So experiment. The fastest way to learn the editor is to open a draft page and mess with it until it stops being mysterious.<\/p>\r\n\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Your website has two sides.
